A Drug On the Market 滯銷貨;供應過剩的物品
逛yahoo!奇摩字典的時候，看到這個片語，引發我對它的好奇。
因為，這個詞語的意思可不是字面上所指的[上市藥品]喔。
它實際上的用法跟藥品已經沒什麼關係了，而是泛指商品，只要是供過於求的商品，就可以用 a drug on the market 來形容; 也有人用 a drug in the market
根據 answers.com 的解釋 ，這個片語的定義為 [A commodity whose supply greatly exceeds the demand for it.] 例句:Now that asbestos is considered dangerous, asbestos tile is a drug on the market. answers.com 中的解釋指出，把drug這個字當成 "過剩品" 的用法最早可追溯到17世紀中期，但以a drug on the market這個組合出現，則是從1830年代開始才有的.

但是，我個人覺得很困惑的是這個片語的由來 --- 為什麼 [市場上的藥]會被引申成[滯銷品]的意思呢?
若依answers.com的說明，認為是把drug 相對於 medicine 來講; 或許是指 drug 是人家不要買的 (沒有需求), medicine 則是人家會去買、會去用的 (有需求的)
不過, 根據牛津辭典 (Oxford English Dictionary), 以及我在網海中搜尋發現 The Phrase Finder討論區裡網友發表的內容 (http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/10/messages/776.html) ，則認為之所以會用drug這個字，可能跟醫藥扯不上什麼關聯，說不定只是無心插柳 或 文字遊戲的結果 :
1) 為了押頭韻而採用drug <如: 1661 FULLER [He] made such a vent for Welsh Cottons, that what he found Drugs at home, he left Dainties beyond Sea. >
2) 原本是用 drag (有拖累的意思) 這個字, 結果不知怎地輾轉誤用為 drug這個字了 (某網友的推測)
所以，這個詞很好玩，也很令人丈二金剛摸不著頭腦，
但其實此一習語並不那麼常用，甚至可能會發生混淆:
eg 1. Viagra seems a promising product, never a drug on the market. (威而剛似乎前景看好，絕不至於滯銷) à 習語
eg 2. If the company cannot get a drug on the market, it will never make a profit. (若該公司無法推出任何藥品上市，就不可能賺錢) à 一般片語用法, get something on the market = 讓某商品上市, 此處的片語應該說是 on the market, 而非 a drug on the market.
個人結論:
這個片語看來就連英語系國家的人自己也不是很了解，並且也不常用，建議大家知道 drug 還有這種用法就好，自己說、寫的時候避免使用，以免畫虎不成反類犬。
